Popularity Poll In Beans 15

Thursday
Jul 22,2010

I haven’t been around much because I’m busy. Don’t ask me when I’ll be done with the translation, because I don’t know myself. XD

Anyway, in The Beans #15, there were the results of a character popularity poll (there were also some mini-novels). I don’t have The Beans #15, so I don’t know what happened in them, but there seems to be one about the Kou clan, one about the Nightmare exam group, one about the Censorate, and one about the Ran clan. Actually, the Ran clan one contains some pretty shocking information. Which I shall talk about in the ‘more’ section.

1. Shuurei
2. Ensei
3. Ryuuki
4. Seiran
5. Seiga
6. Reishin
7. Kouyuu
8. Kouki
9. Ryuuren
10. Suou
11. Yuushun
12. Shouka
13. Shuuei
14. Houju
15. Riou

Around 37 pages to go

Sunday
May 30,2010

Heading into the home stretch, but it might take me awhile to finish things, because of external factors (busyness, etc.). I wonder how people think novel 16 compares to novel 15? We’re almost to the end anyway. Perhaps people are losing interest in the novels because the story is taking a darker turn. On the other hand, as I can see from the LJ comm, people are more interested in a scan of a picture than a translation which must have taken someone a long time to do, so eh, whatever.

Maybe the official translation of the manga will change things, but with only five volumes out, the translators are going to catch up to the Japanese publication schedule fairly quickly. In any case, we’ve heard like nothing about the next novel (totally unsurprising), although I have heard via blogs that the next The Beans (the magazine) will have Saiunkoku on the cover, and that there will also be a Saiunkoku short story in it. As the cost of international postage is prohibitive, though, I won’t be buying it, although if I end up finding detailed spoilers on Japanese blogs, I may relay them.

After I finish translating this novel, there is going to be a fairly large wait until the next one, so I think I’ll start translating some non-Saiunkoku stuff. I’ve pretty much translated most of what I wanted to in Saiunkoku, and I won’t deny that the Saiunkoku fandom is pretty moribund as far as discussion goes, so that also saps my motivation, because the reason I started translating Saiunkoku specifically (as opposed to some other book) was that I hoped that it would spark some meaty discussion in the fandom. Ah well. Basically there’s one or two people who DO discuss what I translate, and that keeps me going on. XD

Anyway, I’ll probably translate the next novel of Saiunkoku when it comes out (which I suppose might be over a year? who knows?), so don’t worry about that, and definitely, please do not write me emails or comments pestering me about when I will be done with (fill in the blank here).

I’m thinking for what I translate, I might try a mostly futile ‘back-translation’ of the Japanese version of Ravages of Time (which should be interesting to compare to the Chinese->English version) or translate some shounen military manga. Either that, or really stretch and translate some Japanese Sengoku-era historical novels, although that will truly be challenging.
