Well, looks like I managed to finish this summary before the new Gaiden comes out on November 1st. Yay? I uh… will probably get that one done in a more timely fashion, as I plan to split it into two parts, first the new material and then the old stuff.
Shuurei and co arrive in the capital of Ran Province, Gyokuryuu (jewel + dragon, for those of you into kanji), which is a city even more splendid than Kiyou, with many canals (I guess kind of like Venice?). They meet with the governor of Ran Province, Kyou Bunchuu, a man in his forties who is also part of the Nightmare National Exam group. Governor Kyou tells Shuurei that Seiga previously had come to Ran Province, as part of his duties as a Censor (they roam the country investigating wrongdoing), and impressed people there; he also researched the Shiba clan. Governor Kyou is surprised to learn that Seiga has not risen to a high rank. He also says that right now, if Shuurei and Seiga were to compete, he would bet on Seiga. He also talks about how an official only needs to take eighty percent of the go pieces in order to succeed. Shuurei brings the governor up to date on Ryuuki’s journey. He is astounded that no one tried to stop the king. Later, Bunchuu worries about Yuushun, and his vice-governor suggests that he return to the capital if he’s so worried. Many high positions are unfilled. But, Bunchuu is filling an important post as the governor of Ran province, who must contend with the powerful Ran clan. He reflects on the current political situation: in terms of the high officials, nothing has changed for years (probably this is partially the fault of Reishin, who doesn’t try to look towards the future), unusually, but now that Yuushun has arrived, things have begun to move under the surface. Yuushun is an idealist who wants to take all of the go pieces, that is, to gamble and risk everything. Bunchuu prays that he’ll be careful, but since the king has ran off and pushed all the work on him, Yuushun is in a risky position.
Bunchuu and the vice-governor talk some more. It seems that although Bunchuu didn’t seem to be very friendly towards Shuurei, he did actually intend to welcome her, but because of his dour face and manner, it didn’t work out that well. XD Also, the vice gov recalls him saying to remember that one doesn’t be come an official just to be promoted, but for the sake of the people. We also hear that when he was taking the exam, people thought he was a ghost and were frightened, and Reishin, hearing the rumor, led some campaign to exorcise the ghost. Bunchuu was told by a fortuneteller this was the second most (something… crucial or worst) time of his life, but this makes him feel worse, because if this was the second, what is the first going to be like? However, soon he may have to return and make a decision. [Hmm, this guy seems like a really interesting character. I would like to see him return to the capital, to see what he would do. If he really thinks Yuushun is overreaching, maybe he should play the Suou role and become his aide.]
Shuurei has Suou and Ensei research the various cases. Suou is shocked that Ensei is capable of investigating, because he thought he was as dumb as he (Suou) was. [... Suou would have to be stupid to believe he was stupid. Erg. ] Shuurei investigates Jin’s case, and finds he was sentenced to death and was supposed to be sent to Kiyou to be executed, but instead the execution was supposedly performed in Ran Province. She finds that besides Son Ryouou, Ou Ki (who at that time had Kouki’s job as head of the Censorate) has also signed off on the orders.
Ryuuki and co are still travelling, and they end up near the Nine Colors Cove (which is near the real house of the Ran family). The Ran house is on the Sleeping Dragon mountain, and the Hyou clan has a shrine on the Houkyou (Treasure Mirror?) mountain. That region is famous for testing the valor of kings. During one reign, there was a succession dispute and all of the princes went to the area, but only one returned (we later learn, because his trusted retainers aided him). Ryuuki merely intends to go to see Shuuei, but there’s a problem. For some reason, only those of the main line of the Ran clan can get there easily without getting lost. Even Jyuusan-hime took half a month (the distance is about two days) to get there because she kept losing the way. Unfortunately, the next day, when Jyuusan-hime awakes, she finds that both Ryuuki and Shouka have gone missing.
In the Ran clan’s manor, Shuuei meets with Setsuna. Setsuna asks him if he intends to throw away the Ran clan and choose that foolish king. Shuuei says that even if the Ran clan won’t choose Ryuuki, he will, and that the Ran clan can manage without him. Even if Ryuuki ends up badly, Shuuei will follow him to the very end. But Setsuna refuses to let Shuuei leave the clan, and also reveals that the priestess who entered the shrine is Shusui. Shuuei goes to search for Ryuuki.
Meanwhile, Shuurei learns that Ryuuki has entered the forbidden Nine Colors Cove. Shuurei resolves to bring him back, even if it it means risking her job. As Shuurei leaves, she asks Bunchuu what the name of the Censorate official who suggested throwing the manjuu into the water was. He replies that it was Ou Ki, speaking with great respect. [Interesting. So Ou Ki is not just a man seeking power or a mere defender of noble privileges.] She also learns the souvenirs Kouki asked her to get exist only in Nine Colors Cove (ahaha). Ryuuren pops up with a boat to take them there.
Ryuuki is walking through the forest. Nine Colors Cove is a weird place. The lakes are pure green, with white tree trunks in the water, and there are no fish. Also, trees seem to grow right out of the water. Ryuuki is still rather upset over the mess he’s in, and he sees three baby pandas, and after recalling that pandas are not carnivorous, huggles them (see illustration). Later, Ryuuki collapses due to altitude sickness. Although Ryuuki is in good shape, due to his training in swordfighting, this kind of problem occurs when you ascend too quickly. While Ryuuki is unconscious, Shiba Jin picks him up and takes him to the Hyou clan’s shrine and imprisons him.
Shuurei, Ensei, Suou, and Ryuuren arrive at Nine Colors Cove (it was quick because the Ran clan has really fast boats). When Shuurei awakes, Ryuuren has gone off to look for a hot spring, but suddenly, they meet Shiba Jin. He tells them Ryuuki s being held prisoner unconscious in the shrine, and he has been ordered to take Shuurei there alone by Hyou Ruka. However, she is not Jin’s true master, and he doesn’t really care about that, so Shuurei orders Ensei and Tantan to go search for Kouki’s omiyage, and if they uh… happen to end up following the same path as Shuurei and Jin, so be it. Jin explains that there probably are no fish because the chemicals in the land dye the water green and kill the algae, meaning no food for fish. Jin continues to insist he is not Jin. Also, strangely, although Tantan seems pretty tired out by the hike, Shuurei feels totally fine. [Yet more evidence of changes to her body, or perhaps evidence that Suou needs to hit the gym.] Shuurei enters the shrine and meets Shusui, or actually, Hyou Ruka possessing the body of Shusui. She falls unconscious.
Ruka also goes to meet Ryuuki. She says he reminds her of his father, and also says that he is an easier king to manipulate than Seien, and orders him to abdicate. She says that Ryuuki is too weak to be a good king, and that she can find a replacement (as Uu Uu should have told him, the royal house and the Hyou clan are two sides of the same coins, both carrying the blood of the first king, and cannot survive without each other). She says he is not king, and that he should have realized it himself, and that he simply engaged in politics for the sake of a woman. He ignores Uu and Ou Ki’s advice, and doesn’t care about anything as long as he can be with Shuurei. Exhausting his officials, as the old ones retire, he hasn’t tried to nurture new ones, and has wasted the last two years. The Hyou clan will not recognize himn, and it’s not only them. Ryuuki cannot deny this, but Ryuuki refuses to give up. It seems what had truly bothered Ryuuki was that he had deep down desired to b king, but was horrifed that he was not truly so. Now that Ryuuki has, however, realized he wishes to be king for his own sake, and not for Shouka or Shuurei’s, he won’t give up. Because Ryuuki had heard that only a true king may arrive at the shrine, he secretly decided to go there. [Well, I guess being carried up and imprisoned there is one way of arriving.] Ryuuki will no longer say that he doesn’t want to be king, and although he is ‘Ryuuki’ he will no longer attempt to evade or throw away the part of himself that is ‘king’ as well. Ruka didn’t expect this of Ryuuki, but no matter. She orders Jin to kill him.
At this moment, Shuuei steps in. It seems he was watching from the shadows all this time (embarassingly for Ryuuki, he also witnessed the panda-huggling…). Ryuuki is still unable to fight because of the altitude sickness, but Jyuusan-hime also arrives to defend Ryuuki. Jyuusan-hime says she’ll buy them time by taking on Jin, even if she’s outclassed, and Shuuei tries to leave with Ryuuki, but they are opposed by a brainwashed Shusui. Shuuei decides to break the brainwashing with the Power of Love!! So he says ‘look over there, it’s Shouka!’ Everyone else yells at him for this, but it works. XD (Shuuei himself feels pitiful to have used the name of another man, since he’s in love with her. T_T)
Meanwhile, in the room with the sacred mirror sealing the 108 spirits in the lake, the spirit of Ruka (her real body is somewhere else; unlike Riou (lil’ Riou’s dad), her younger brother, she is not unaging. However, her spirit still appears young) is looking at Shuurei, who is still out cold. Her plan is to take over the body of Bara-hime’s daughter so that her younger brother will finally look at her. Ruka, in case you don’t recall, is totally obsessed with him for some reason.
Shouka, however, is not going to let her just do that. He says that he thought she was rotting away somewhere (she’s over eighty), and Ruka says that as usual, he has quite a sharp tongue, and says she doesn’t entirely hate him. The rest of the conversation is confusing… I hope this does get animated so it makes more sense, or it could just be that this is a lot of foreshadowing. Shouka asks how much longer she’s going to be obsessed with her good for nothing younger brother. Ruka says how can someone who became obsessed with a sennyo (female Immortal), stealing away and marrying her, criticize her. [It's somewhat difficult to understand with my limited Japanese skills what Ruka is saying, because her speech pattern is odd.] She goes on about how women foolishly live for the sake of their men, and how men exploit women and cause wars and misrule the land. She also says that Shouka has committed many evil deeds, and Shuurei must sadly bear the burden of both his and Bara-hime’s actions, and there is no longer a place for her on the surface of the country (front side… I think she is referring to how the Shi clan is the front and the Hyou clan the back of the coin.) Shouka continues to prevent fate. She says that it is Shuurei’s destiny to madden men, and although they try to help her, eventually destroy her. So, why not give her Shuurei, to spare her from this destiny?
However, Shouka won’t be convinced by her sophistries. He refuses. Ruka says that he has always been like that, and that wishing for a flower, he won’t rest until he gets it, even if he knows it shall wither once he has it. The woman who is loved by Shouka shall certainly be happy. Loved to the point of not caring whether one is destroyed. However, no matter how much the flower is loved, the fact that a plucked flower shall wither shall not change. But Shouka, at the very least, will not hand her over to Ruka and Riou, but at least let her live freely. Ruka asks if he is even willing to break sacred mirror to defeat her. (Shouka, having no mystical powers, can only do that to make her retreat). Of course he is. Shouka says that not to complain because the work of her clan has increased a bit, but to work hard. Ruka says that she does not hate Shouka. He’s as calm as ice, rational and realistic, won’t care what he breaks in order to get the person he loves. (Like right now, Shouka is rather indifferent about what disaster will occur). She admires the depth of Shouka’s feelings, but says his beloved daughter will be destroyed by his love, and she and Shouka are the same kind of person. She swears that just as he stole Bara-hime, she shall steal Shuurei. Then Shouka breaks the mirror, and she fades, smiling as if she were the victor. Then the mountain begins to shake.
Shuuei has brought Ryuuki down to the boat to leave him with Suou. Shuuei tells Suou if anything bad happens, to leave without the rest of them. At first Ryuuki is shocked, but then, thinking of how Shuuei has left Jyuusan-hime and Shusui up in the mountain, how Shuurei came to look for him, and how Suou is willing to leave Ensei and Shuurei behind, realizes that he must, as Shuuei said, be more conscious of who he is. He accepts Shuuei’s words. [See what I mean about Ryuuki getting character development?]
Jyuusan-hime and Jin face off. He asks if Ryuuki is a kind person, and Jyuusan-hime says “more than you.” Jin says that’s a bit painful to hear, but Jyuusan-hime says that they were happy together, yet she can’t throw everything away to be with him. She says, finally, that she loved Shiba Jin, but that Jin is now dead, and this is over. She asks him to give back the eyepatch she sewed for him, because she made it for Jin. He does, and she cuts it to shreds. Jin says he is no longer the man willing to give his life for her. Jyuusan-hime says that she will become happy and not waste the life that Jin gave to her (she says there are lots of men in this world better than him). She’s done living for Jin, and shall live for herself. But Jin says that he’ll never find a woman better than Hotaru. She tells him he no longer has the right to use that name, but he says it is his alone, and he knows of no other name for her. On that alone, he won’t budge…
Shusui rushes to save Shuurei and finds that some idiot has broken the sacred mirror! She accuses Ensei, who has also come to the room, who denies it, but she forgives him because he didn’t know any better. Shusui finds the erhu that Sou Youki used to seal the 108 spirits. Suddenly, she sees Kuro approaching Shuurei. It jumps on her and melts into her hand. Suddenly, it begins to rain.
Shuuei and Ryuuren see it has begun to rain. Shuuei asks “Ran Ryuuren” whether he can do anything, and he begins to play his flute with a great deal of effort. Shuuei thinks the mountain is shaking less, and the rain has become less intense. In this area, the name “Ran Ryuuren” has a special meaning.
Meanwhile in the boat, Suou and Ryuuki are feeling rather wretched under the rain. Then Shuurei and the rest arrive. Shuuei is about to go back for his sister, but then Jin arrives carrying her, unconscious (seems he knocked her out). Jin says this is not where they will have their final match, and Shuuei is surprised that Jin, a man who would not swear his loyalty to Setsuna, would become an assassin for someone. Shusui decides to stay along there also, because she is afraid she will just be brainwashed again. She meets Shouka, and says that she shall face the rest of the Hyou clan, and stop running away. Shouka warns that she may never be able to break free again, but her resolve is firm.
They all return to the Ran clan’s nearby mansion. Shuuei asks his elder brothers to have a wager with him. If he can tell them apart, they will agree to certain conditions. Although this is one of those scenes not shown, Shuuei, surprise, wins, and in return for him not getting two of them killed, has himself disinherited so he may be free to follow Ryuuki. There may also be other terms (ambiguous). However, Shuuei says that even if their public ties are broken, he is still their brother, and will help them if they need it.
As Shuurei is resting, she half-wakes up and sees her father watching over her, but she thinks it’s a dream since he shouldn’t be there. Shouka is worried about Shusui, whom he thinks of as a daughter. Shuurei says that she can’t separate herself from her father yet. BTW, later Shouka had to worry about how he was going to explain himself… He ended up saying he lied because it was you know, a matter of state, and that he was “rescued by the Black Wolf” (to Jyuusan-hime’s great excitement. XDDD)
Jyuusan-hime explains her history with Jin. (I explained it earlier so we don’t have to get into that part again). We also learn that Shuuei’s dad was one of those rare people capable of polyamory, and so he uh, somehow managed to make all of his wives like him and be satisfied married to him. Shuurei stops Jyuusan-hime before she can get to the part about how she asked the triplets for help. Shuurei guesses that the triplets actually did nothing, because they didn’t wish to commit the serious crime that interfering in such matters would be, but just pretended that they had in order to make their sister feel better. [Really. No wonder Shuuei said that they weren't soft. 0_o They got her to promise them stuff in exchange for nothing. They simply said "wakatta" (means, "understood" or "I know." Which means they never concretely promised anything.] Shuurei wonders what she would do if she were the official judging Jin. Patricide is the greatest of the “Ten Crimes,” but because of the circumstances, Shuurei would try to give him a lesser sentence.
Ryuuki meets with Shuuei. He says he wishes for Shuuei to return to him. He is asking for him as an ally, not as a friend (of course Ryuuki wants friends, but as king, what he needs is allies). He asks Shuuei to swear his absolutely loyalty to him. He asks Shuuei to choose him, because he has chosen him. (Yeah, and one of them does think this almost sounds like a romantic proposal XDDD). Shuuei reveals that he has been disinherited and can no longer use the power of the Ran clan (Setsuna does not wish to meet with Ryuuki, nor will he have the officials of the Ran family return), but Ryuuki doesn’t care.
Then, now that Ryuuki is fed and rested, Shuuei challenges him to a rematch (see volume eleven). Shuuei handily wins. Ryuuki is rather shocked, and it seems that Shuuei has been holding back his true power and was not able to be serious earlier because he was uncertain of his loyalties. But now that Shuuei has wholeheartedly sworn his loyalty to Ryuuki, he is able to show him how strong he really is. (The Shiba clan, under whom he trained, has the rule ‘don’t show anyone your true power.’ In the bodyguard army, the only people he loses two are the two generals.) It seems that Shuuei had not been sure Ryuuki would want him back without the Ran clan’s power. (It seems, BTW, that Yuushun had foreseen this and advised Ryuuki how to regain Shuuei’s loyalty. Yuushun is fairly scary.)
Shouka has something very important to say to the Ran triplets (”Ran Setsuna”: among people who do know them, they call themselves Yuki (snow.. the setsu of setsuna is this kanji), and probably Tsuki and Hana. (Snow, moon, flower: it’s a phrase relating to the four seasons)). BTW, when they were kids, Shouka was their tutor (well, considering their ages, more like their babysitter). Because of this, they’re very fond of him, and wish that he was their elder brother (they think he’s wasted on Reishin. BTW, Reishin and the triplets detest each other). Shouka discusses… something with them (it seems this was one of his main motivations for coming to Ran Province). They say they will see when the time comes. However, we don’t get to actually hear what this important future request is. Anyway, they all head back to Kiyou using the Ran clan’s super-fast boats.
Then we have the infamous conversation between Ryuuki and Shuurei. He tells her he will no longer be king for her sake, which surprises her. He says, he’s not really sure exactly why, still, but he wants to become a king worthy of being respected by all those who have sworn their loyalty to him. He says that he shall find his own way as king. (She thinks she can see him becoming king in this instant) Ryuuki tells Shuurei as king, he must marry, and he shall have Jyuusan-hime enter the Inner Palace as Shusui’s replacement. If he marries anyone other than Shuurei, it shall be her. He cannot afford to wait for Shuurei. Shuurei is more moved than she thought she would be by these words. So he shall give himself a certain period of time to win her hand, a time which is not short, but not long either…
Suou and Ensei talk on the boat. Suou asks him if he likes Shuurei. Ensei says nothing and just smiles. Suou reflects that he has never met a man who could so thoroughly separate private and public matters. (Ensei has chosen to support Shuurei being an official) He thinks Ensei is cooler than Seiran. Meanwhile, Ryuuren and Shuuei also talk. Ryuuren hears about how Shuurei can drink unimaginable amounts of liquor. Shuurei’s body is somehow continuing to change.
Upon arriving in Kiyou, Suou goes straight to Kouki’s office and gives him a full report. Later, Shuurei reports to Kouki, who says he knows what she did. If we remember volume 10, when Suou said to Kouki he knew of Shuurei’s weakness, it was there that Kouki agreed to spare Suou’s father if Suou reported on Shuurei to him. However, Tantan has agreed to be fired in place of Shuurei, and is leaving for the provinces. (He also decided to leave so that Kouki wouldn’t use him to spy on Shuurei. Unlike Ensei, Suou will not throw away everything for Shuurei, but he’s willing to do at least this. ) Shuurei rushes to where Suou is preparing to leave the capital, and promises that if she’s promoted, she’ll bring him back to work under her.
As they set off, Suou’s father is confused. Didn’t Suou receive a promotion? So why is Shuurei so sad? … It seems that actually, Suou was promoted to the same rank as Shuurei (before he was her assistant). XD His job is now to go around the country investigating corruption. Ahaha. It seems that later (future narrator again) Suou leaves his mark on history as a legendary censorate official (it’s useless to hide anything from him), famed for his ability to work undercover, and expose wrongdoing with minimal harm to innocents.
When Ryuuki returns to the palace, Yuushun greets him, then begins to tell him about Kouyuu…
Commentary: Obviously, since the volume ends with Yuushun starting to tell Ryuuki what happened to Kouyuu, the next volume will have Kouyuu doing something. Up to this point, I had felt that Kouyuu was rather an overrated character, comparatively, because after vol 2-3 he never really did anything vital to the plot, and a lot of his characterization bits were repetitive, because all Kouyuu did repeatedly was realize zomg what should I do wait I don’t need to make a decision right now. Now perhaps Kouyuu will have to FINALLY make a decision. I think he’ll decide for Ryuuki. Well, obviously, we KNOW thanks to future narrator that Kouyuu has a distinguished career as one of Ryuuki’s officials. Actually, what Reishin will do is far more interesting. It is actually hard to see when, if ever, Kouyuu has done anything worthy of reprimand, whereas not doing your job is usually a firing offense, so if anyone should be fired, it would be Reishin.
It is unclear whether Yuushun has any ideas for helping Ryuuki gain Kouyuu’s wholehearted loyalty.
BTW, I think I now support Shuuei/Shusui simply because I feel sorry for Shuuei, and wish that Shusui would just move on from Shouka, since it’s obvious he thinks of her as a daughter, kind of like Kourin and Sa Enjun. Well, who knows how this will work out, now that Shusui is stuck with the Hyou clan.
As for Shouka, he’s one of my favorite characters, so I’m glad to see him finally doing something in the story after a lot of inactivity. Although, just how productive is Shouka if he can just pop off to vacation with Ryuuki for a month or two? We never see any mention of other officials in the archives. Shouka doesn’t even think that he needs to explain his absence to anyone other than Shuurei and Seiran. Is his post a sinecure or something? Also, it amuses me how Shouka uh… just sort of wandered away from the boat during the whole confusing confrontation with Hyou Ruka, and no one noticed that he was gone. I would think that they should at least worry what they’re going to tell Shuurei. “Uh… Shuurei, I brought your dad along for fun, but I kind of misplaced him.
”
Ryuuki: Since Ryuuki’s main flaw, in terms of action was… essentially not building relationships with his top officials. So now are we going to see Ryuuki reaching out to the ones who are not particularly impressed with him? … That will be quite a sight to see. But yes, I am really curious to see how this new Ryuuki will rule.
Suou: Argh, am sad that Suou is not going to be in the next vol, probably, because he has become one of my favorite characters. Unfortunately he didn’t get to do much in this volume, but I hope later Shuurei will go to the provinces and ally with him. Or… gaiden story about the great detective censorate official Shin Suou? I think a character like him is both useful and difficult for an author. It’s both inconvenient and convenient to have a character who sees through people and their schemes.
Ran clan: Shuuei was v. cool in this volume, I got to say. I wish there was more Ryuuren, because he didn’t do much other than show up and be all mystical. Setsuna, also I want to see more of him/and them, but then they would have to come to Kiyou, as it seems unlikely the story will go back to Ran Province. (Or will it? I really want to see the other provinces, especially Kou province)
Jin and Jyuusan-hime: Jyuusan-hime is def. a strong character. I like her and look forward to seeing what she’ll do later. As for Jin, maybe it doesn’t come through in the summaries, but he’s quite charming. I look forward to finding just WHO he swore his loyalty to, and why? And his final match-up with Shuuei. I am wondering whether Jin will come to a happy or unhappy end… So far in the story, there hasn’t been much Tragic Death, which it would be if Shuuei ended up killing the man who was once his best friend.

Because Ryuuki had heard that only a true king may arrive at the shrine, he secretly decided to go there. [Well, I guess being carried up and imprisoned there is one way of arriving.]
I laugh very hard at this comment :).
I guess “maybe” Shurei and Ryuuki might not end up together at the end.
Seems like most of the guy who know Shurei end up liking her and want to marry her.
Was there any mentioning of what Seiran doing at Kiyou instead of going with Ryuuki and Shurei.
Thank you so much for posting this part of the novel.

I just really have no idea at this point. I don’t know if the fans would stand for it not happening, though. XD
He was guarding Yuushun, and he also saw some of what was going on with Seiga and Kouyuu. Ryuuki, BTW, didn’t want Seiran to go with him.
You’re welcome!

we will never know this until the end of the series. it was just written above that ryuuki can’t afford to wait for her any longer, so if shuurei still refuses to marry him, he’ll marry jyuusan-hime instead…
it makes ryuukixshuurei fans want to scream at shuurei. XD

Hi again! Sorry for bothering you, but out of curiosity… where you said to “see illustration” regarding Ryuuki huggling the panda’s… where can one find that illustration? ^^; It’s not so much because it’s Ryuuki, but… panda’s! I wanna see. T_T
Also, in regards to your response up above… what do you mean by saying that “Ryuuki, BTW, didn’t want Seiran to go with him.” Is it because of the whole issue regarding the bit about only the real emperor can survive going to the top of the cave?

I don’t really know… Try looking on the Saiunkoku LJ comm? Someone might have put up scans.
No, because I don’t think he knew about that at the time. Seiran also is Yuushun’s bodyguard, so Ryuuki can’t just take him away without a replacement, but also it seems that Ryuuki wants to resolve this alone, and he feels he needs to do it without his brother.

The next gaiden SHOULD be interesting, I hope, because the title is “Lily(yuri)” something, which I really really hope means that it’s about Yuri-hime, Reishin’s mysterious wife. If it is about her, we’ll probably get more info about Kouyuu too.
Man, I can’t wait for all this to be animated. Kouki is quickly turning out to be one of my favorite characters (he shows up in the anime this week! Yay!), and I really want to see Jin and Jyuusan-hime animated. Can’t resist a good tragic but true romance. They’re like Romeo and Juliet if R&J had decided to stop being angsty teenagers and do something rather than pine and commit suicide.

I posted about it on the LJ comm, BTW, but the title is Tonari no Yuri wa Shiroi. There will, at least, probably be something about Reishin. Am not sure when it will be set, in the past or the present.
I know, I’m really interested to see where Kouki goes next… Jyuusan-hime I also want to see animated. Actually, I just download random raws to see how they animated the characters. XD

Thanks for the summary. Was waiting for it for a while!
Now, with ruka:shouka convo, it makes me wonder even more what shuurei’s destiny would be and who exactly is she or well her mum probably.
About RyuukixShuurei…hmm i’ve always thought they might not be able to end up together but probably shuurei will come to love him in the romantic way? hahaha I’ve been thinking that she might end up…..
I also wonder ab how if the history might repeat because Ryuuki resembles his dad? yet it doesnt seem so..
oh can i paste a link here? it’s where u can see ryuuki cuddling the pandas!

Yeah, Shuurei’s destiny is confusing. Am not sure why Ruka sees Shouka as soooo sinful, considering all of the things Ruka’s plotted in the series.
From just reading the books, I’ve also wondered about that. There’s just so much rumination about “there are things more important than romantic love, you know” and all. Well, at least if history repeats in that sense, Ryuuki intends to only marry one woman (Jyuusan-hime) and treat her well, unlike how previous king treated his wives.

Just out of curiosity, did it explain why Ryuuki decided upon Jyuusan-hime to be his “backup” wife? Is it just because she resembles Shuurei or something? Sorry to ask another question. It just kinda made me wonder why her all of the sudden. It just seems interesting and odd that a lot of people know about Shuurei’s destiny outside of herself.

Ryuuki and Jyuusan-hime get along, and they’re already good friends and close to each other. Plus, Jyuusan-hime is extremely honorable and committed to being a good queen, if asked, and she also feels for Ryuuki and wants to support him both privately and publicly. Also, it doesn’t hurt that she certainly would be accepted as a suitable bride by Uu Uu and Riou Jr.
It is. I wish that someone would spill the beans already.
The suspense is irritating. XD

There are tons of pictures of Jyuusan-hime in the novels. She sort of resembles Shuurei (black hair, cute face) and wears her hair up in a ponytail. She’s on the cover of 11 riding a horse.

Ah! That would explain it! I think I thought SHE was Shuurei…
…I think there’s one pic with her holding a blade with Jin behind her? It’s kind freaky how she looks so much like Shuurei (naturally intentional, but seriously, the can pass as twins), I was trying to figure out when did Shuurei look so badass. Well, now I know. That was Jyuusan-hime X3
She IS older than Shuurei right?
“Ryuuren hears about how Shuurei can drink unimaginable amounts of liquor. Shuurei’s body is somehow continuing to change.”
For some reason, this freaks me out…as in, in a very random way…I keep imagining Shuurei as a Wolverine for some reason @______@;;;
On a serious note, obviously this is an aspect of the Bara-hime…which is a…healing factor T____T;;;

No, it’s…prolly cos pandas are cute…

Oh, the ’super fast Ran ships’…
I’m sorry, but a lot of things are screaming DEUX EX MACHINA to me right now. Maybe it’s because of the overt amount of supernatural mystic magic happening in this novel, but I’m detecting a very great deviation in the narrative…

worldserpent@livejournal reply on October 18th, 2007 7:54 am:
So far Shuurei hasn’t gutted anyone yet, though. Maybe she will sometime.
It is an obvious fanservice shot. BTW, IIRC pandas don’t normally have triplets, but one cub or twins… the mother usually abandons one of the cubs if they are twins. Huh, maybe you could pretend there is a connection there. XDDD However, the triplets show no signs of wishing to be huggled by Ryuuki, to put it mildly. XD
Well, the ships aren’t… instantaneous? They’re not really an important part of the narrative. But yes, with Hyou Ruka coming in, this volume did have more of a mystical focus, but no more so, I would say, than the part of the story about Eigetsu/Yougetsu. The major deus ex machina part is maybe just the “natural” disaster (well, actually Shouka’s fault), but since it happens as a result of the defeat of Hyou Ruka, and not as a cause, I’m okay with it.

It was part of their ploy to get Shuuei back, and possibly also to see what Jin was up to. Plus, having a member of the Ran clan as the emperor’s consort is prestigious. (So Jyuusan-hime would sort of replace Shuuei as “member of the Ran clan at court” I guess.)

Hi, thanks for your summaries. I have been following this series but it seems that the plot gets more twisted each time. I just hope they won’t decide to end this a lot lot later with the ending being left to the readers/audience to interpret.
From the very start, Shuurei seemed to have only seen Ryuuki like a brother, like Seiran. She grew up with only her dad and Seiran with her after her mom died, so it seems that she would find it more normal to go after career and supporting the household rather than getting herself ready waiting for marriage proposals. She has found an appealing character in Ryuuki. However, she has always complained how much of a kid he is; so the scene where he told her he is considering to marry the 13th princess and wanting to be king for himself not just to have her(Shuurei) had him growing up before Shuurei’s very eyes. (Does this mean he has also been in the 13th princess’ chambers? :D)
Seiran has already moved on with his life and has already accepted the fact that he wants to be in the army. It was implied previously to be that way, so whatever happens, it can be assumed that he does what people in the corp do. They can have him be a bodyguard for one official or whatever as he tries to get himself up the ladder. (They may make a little story about Seiran and his struggles in the army, who knows?)
Regarding the 13th princess, she is Ran clan and there seems to be a rift between their clan and the king’s as implied by Shuuei having to have himself disinherited just to swear his loyalties to the king.
In the anime, there is the tale of the rose princess that has been told to Shuurei by her mom, which she also told Ryuuki when he was “bridging the gap between himself and his wife”. He liked this story a lot. It seems to me that the story is about Shuurei’s mom and that the commoner is Shouka.
Maybe, just maybe, that is the reason why Ruka believes Shuurei is very sinful; because of what her mom did. It’s like breaking an engagement for arranged marriages of some sort, the way I see it. The reason might come out just a little before the series would end but then, only the authors would really know what to talk about next. I just hope they will end this series soon. Who know who would fall for whom and end up with whom? Come to think of it, there are a lot of different possible pairs in this story and a lot of love, though mostly unrequited.
Thanks for your summaries again.

worldserpent@livejournal reply on October 19th, 2007 4:45 am:
Hey, thanks for your long comment!
I just don’t know where she’s going. I actually would continue to read the books if the Ryuuki/Shuurei subplot was resolved somehow, because I really read the books for other things, but I don’t know if that describes most readers.
I think in a sideways way, Shuurei is learning she might lose Ryuuki, and so she’s wondering, with her surprise, whether there might be something more to the shock than just her shock. Ryuuki has grown up a LOT in this arc (I tend to cut Ryuuki tons of slack anyway, as a character, because of all the trauma he’s gone through in his life, and how he has lacked a lot of support, whereas Shuurei has in comparison, was raised with love in a stable household.)
Seiran: Yeah, Seiran didn’t do too much in this volume. I am interested by Ensei’s thought implying that now that Shuurei has become this strong and independent, Seiran can now devote himself to supporting Ryuuki’s rule, secure in the knowledge that she can take care of herself. So it will be interesting to see what steps Seiran will take in support of Ryuuki, especially since Ou Ki is planning to overthrow Ryuuki, and has Son Ryouou’s support (he’s in charge of the army).
13th: Heh, I don’t think Ryuuki has tried to have a sleepover with her. XD Nah, I don’t think there’s as much of a conflict because while Setsuna did not want Shuuei to serve Ryuuki, he specifically sent her to serve him, which implies he’s okay with that. Plus, I think if a woman marries, she is released from a lot of her obligations to her clan.
Yeah, I think that story is in the first gaiden (which I have, but haven’t read/blogged about yet because most of it was covered in the anime. It does confuse me how it’s an old story… yet Shouka re-enacted it? Although, common is the last word I’d use to describe the real Shouka. XD He’s like a superhero or something. The whole conversation with Ruka is just confusing, and especially because Ruka is a master manipulator and is, of course, distorting the truth to try and convince Shouka to give her Shuurei.
[Reply]
Anonymous reply on October 19th, 2007 9:33 pm:
So true… Shouka is not a mere commoner, but the rose princess folk lore seemed to describe the man that the rose princess feel in love with as a commoner because he has no mystical abilities whatsoever. Shouka, on the other hand, is so much like Ryuuki. He made people believe that he could not handle being the head of the Kou clan so Reishin was made the head of the clan who also eventually left everything to Kirou.
There are a lot of people who run away from their duties in this novel/anime/manga, don’t you think?
It gives more color to it, anyway. haha. and a lot of rude people, too (specially as how they portrayed it in the anime)
True, Shuurei may have been surprised at her own surprise. At this point, the plot could actually develop into something that would make her character grow more into her being the rose princess, whom she also identified herself with in the anime, and her abilities to be able to heal people may just come in handy later on, proving to herself, her household and Ryuuki that she is needed by other people and has to help them so the country can get back on its feet.
Who knows, one possible ending could be that, Ryuuki would forever be in love with her but he has to let her go the way he did when he sent her to the Sa Province, only this time, it would be forever. They are really good friends, and Shuurei may just realize that she has also fallen for him without herself even noticing. But then, it wouldn’t matter how much they really love each other. Things are just the way they are and the country must come first. After all, they are both public officials and they have a duty to keep. I don’t know about heirs, though. Coz it seems that the story is set in the future of Saiunkoku which has already become a very stable country.
Well, but then again, that’s just me. hehehe.
Only the author knows what she really wants for this story.
Keep the summaries coming. I really appreciate them.

wow.. never thought about the pandas. And there were 3 of them. A contrast to the setsunas, is that they are rather hard to approach? lol but somehow i linked it up with shouka:setsunas convo.
Yea, history might repeat but then it would be in a different way as the emperor is RYUUKI. He’s been through a lot, so he knows.
Another person i found interesting is Yuushun. I’ve never really thought ab him and his background until it was brought up by kouki? In my mind it’s always that he’s just one of the ppl in reishin-kijin generation.
hmm one question, is shuurei’s mum from the Hyou clan? or just someone that’s locked or captured? by RiouSr?
KaeBoo:-That’s true though, for shuurei has always view Ryuuki to be like a kid that became attached to her. Like those children she teaches in the temple!
Btw, was shuurei upset when he said that he’ll consider Jyuusan-hime if it wasnt shuurei? immortal(this somehow have connection with the other story relating to hagaromo..but unsure just speculating haha)?
Ab ShouTaishi, bet he’s just sitting entertaining himself by watching how those younger generations will tackle and deal with all the obstacles shoved at their face.

worldserpent@livejournal reply on October 19th, 2007 6:06 am:
Frankly, and the previous emperor was a good emperor acknowledged by everyone as an effective ruler, even the people who hated his guts.
Well, in previous books it is foreshadowed that there is something suspicious about his past. Riou has no idea who he really is, for example. Most of the characters do have information about their backgrounds, but absolutely nothing concrete about Yuushun’s family or past before he came to court.
Her mom: entirely unclear at this point. I actually don’t see any evidence that she was. I’m leaning more towards the “she was captured” theory, because I think that there would be more discussion of her being a member of the Hyou clan, if she was. Shusui is def. a member of the clan, though, it seems.
I don’t know if she is upset, more surprised, and surprised that she is so surprised.

Reply to Pandalin about possible similarities between Reishin and Ryuuki:
Yeah, I also wonder about that. Since the storyline did see Ryuuki not truly wanting to be emperor as a problem, maybe it will also see Reishin’s lack of motivation treated as a problem? If you can’t be a true emperor without “wanting it,” the same should be true of being an official.
I think that might be part of why Reishin hates Ryuuki (it’s honestly hard to figure out the way Reishin thinks…). Others are that he legitimately does have a huge grudge against the previous king (but why take it out on Ryuuki? Ryuuki knows nothing). Or, maybe it’s that all of the people he likes like Ryuuki, so he’s jealous. XD
[Reply]
Pandalin reply on October 20th, 2007 10:24 pm:
Yeah! That would actually make a lot of sense knowing what we know of Reishin… that he’s just jealous, eh? Hmm. Given how intelligent Reishin appears to be, I think he knows what we’re seeing/knowing about him (but doesn’t truly want to admit to it)… but rather take all of his frustration out on an easy target… which is obviously Ryuuki.

**We never see any mention of other officials in the archives. Shouka doesn’t even think that he needs to explain his absence to anyone other than Shuurei and Seiran. Is his post a sinecure or something?**
Wasn’t this position given to him because no one else concerned themselves with the archives.
I guess Ryuuren seems to have an Immortal spirit within him, it would explain why he spontaneously attached himself to Shuurei and Eigetsu.
I am very glad to see Ryuuki’s development as a character. I am happy he and Shuuei are together as a team again. Now to convince Kouyuu.
I really like Kouyuu and I hope he goes back to “Ryuuki’s side. I know his actions are contradictory as he tries to serve Ryuuki and Reishin at the same time. However, I think part of Reishin’s attitude is a front and he can’t hate royality so much when he was the one to force Kouyuu to work for Ryuuki in the first place.
I love Yuushun, he is one of my fave older characters! He is so smart and Ryuuki was right in teling him that he may be the only person capable of controlling Reishin and Kijin.
I guess his intelligence and insight are a bit scary but to me that makes him seem that much more competent. Remember he had to use his wits to survive Sa Province!

Thanks Charmian for the summary of the novels that you read. The chapter 12(2/2) will sure be heartbreaking for all the Ryuki x Shuurei fans out there.
Ryuuki seems to run out of patient when dealing with Shuurei. He seems to give the ultimatum that if he cannot succeed in winning her hand, he might juz opt for the substitute that is Jyuusan-hime although he still have feeling for Shuurei.
He is only appointing Jyuusan-hime to the inner palace replacing Shusui and not making Jyuusan-hime as his consort yet like Shuurei last time.I guess her job shall bne similar to ladies in waiting.
Maybe this happened to test whether Ryuki x Shuurei love is strong enough to conquer all the obstacle that is thrown into their way. Maybe the reason why that Shuurei is moved because the writer want to tell us that actually she never realise how deep is her feeling towards Ryuki.
Thats juz me, the ending of the Saiunkoku Monogatari shall lies in the hands of the writter herself.
This story would not be popular as most of the fans I mean the majority are rotting for Ryuki x Shuurei but Ryuki have to proove he is worthy of a king.

Well, it’s not so much that Ryuuki is impatient, it’s that, no matter how he personally feels, it’s a matter of state. To me, though, Ryuuki has really proven how deep his love is for Shuurei. Shuurei doesn’t even define her feelings as romantic love, so the main obstacle is there, almost.

Maybe its to pro-long the story since additional new character like Jyuusan-Hime will sure add up the heat between Ryuki x Shuurei.Maybe its a way for Ryuki to test whether Shuurei have any feelings toward him as Shuurei look upset over his revelations that “if I don’t get you then there shall be someone else to fill the void”
When I saw the Opening Theme of the anime, it show a similarities between Shuurei and the Rose Princess, I think she is becoming the Rose Princess or something like that.

Well, Jyuusan-hime and Jin’s relationship didn’t end up that well… Also Shuuei doesn’t seem to be doing so well convincing Shusui to go out with him. And Kijin (Houju) is still not over Yuri-himel, apparently… Actually, there are even more characters suffering from unrequited love.

Thanks for the reply.I heard there’s about 4 more novels for this series and 2 is the side story so I really cannot gauge the ending for the anime as there’s insufficient novels. Maybe the ending will be another totally different from the novels.

It seems to be the culture in Saiunkoku that they do not tell people even if they know?
Seriously, Shouka knows how much Ryuuki loves his daughter, but he also knows that Shuurei’s ambition is to be able to help the country. He also knows that Seiran is the former Prince Seien and he is the black Wolf. It seems that Shouka holds all bits and pieces but he never tells anyone about anything. He did not even tell his daughter that she has another uncle who has been keeping himself away from her but watches from afar… Strange people, but, it only seems to show that the author would want us to see that no matter how rude they are to one another, they respect each other very much.
Honestly, though, it irritates me to see that Shuurei has been so oblivious to her surroundings, specially at how Ryuuki feels for her, perhaps even how she feels for him…
I wonder if she knew that there had been so many marriage proposals that have been sent for her, including those that involve Ryuuren and Kyouu.
This story really needs to end pretty soon. hehehe. The wait is killing me!!!

If the Shuurei refuse to ever get married to Ryuki, she should have say it honestly to Ryuki when Ryuki tells her he is going to give it another try for their relationship.
She is the one who will eventually suffer when after the prescribes timeframe that Ryuki married to Jyuusan-Hime. So better be honest now rather than regets it later.
If the story is prolong and then end up the main focal point of the story Ryuki x Shuurei end up badly, I think this story will be really dissapointing.
Maybe the author have other idea to end the story I guess thats why Jyuusan-Hime appears. The pro-long process by the author sure makes people cringe at the whole thing.

Even I think Ryuuki and Shuurei won’t end up together, they may as good friends though..The funny part will be what if in the end Shuurei ended up with Kijin<3 or Kouyuu or Ensei harharhar.. I don’t know what Seiran will do to them^-^ Not to mention Reishin OMG!!!
I’ve just started watching the anime season 1 recently and have been wading through your awesome summaries slowly as I haven’t got enough time to read them all yet fully. Also the character names and titles are so confusing I have to go back and forth to make sure!!^^;
btw than you so much for summarizing!!<3<3

I really, really feel sorry for the state that the Ryuuki x Shuurei relationship is in.
I understand that Ryuuki’s patience is growing thin, coupled with somebody pressing him to hurry up and get married, but it just pains me a lot to see that he has to give up Shuurei for the time being and accept Jyuusan-hime. He’d waited and waited and waited, only to realize that his duty as king will overpower his desire for his love. Its really depressing. Moreover, from the summaries I’ve read (volumes 9-current), it seems that the author is implying that Shuurei will face the threat of death? I mean, there’s this part about someone saying the ‘cave’ is not the place of her death? Something like that. Then there’s the condition about her health. Was Bara-Hime a member of the Hyou Clan? I don’t really understand the part when people suspect that Shuurei is related to the Hyou clan by blood. =X
In any case…I really hope a good and satisfying resolution to the relationship that is Ryuuki x Shuurei at the end of this whole story.
Also, Shuurei has to grow up and start realizing her limits, as someone else has pointed out. She’s been brought up in safe environment, sheltered from all sorts of harm, but after experiencing certain things she should’ve realized a lot of things by now -_-;;
(Note that I only read the summaries from voume 9…Because I only stumbled upon them yesterday, and wanted to know what happened after episode 23 of the second season >_>)

I have no idea whether it is implying whether Shuurei will or will not face death. I actually think she won’t, but there are some indications that she seems to think she will. It’s very unclear.
It is also unclear whether Bara-hime was a member of the Hyou clan. There are some things about the way things are written that makes me think she was not, though, although I have no good evidence either way.
Yeah, well, it seems she is wising up a bit. She’ll have to get better if she wants to beat Seiga, though.

Byakko reply on October 23rd, 2007 1:36 am:
I doubt the Bara-hime is of the Hyou clan (possibly distantly related?)
Remember when we talked about how there really isn’t any demons/spirits in this game, besides the sages and human ones?
Well, all things considered, even though I’m guessing her ‘rose’ origin might be metaphorical, I think that the Bara-hime might actually be of ‘non-human/humanoid’ origin, as in, the literal spirit of rose that cultivated itself over years to attain human form.
That’s taking from the Chinese mythology of course; but I feel that it’s pretty definite that the Bara-hime is clearly not human, even less human than the Hyou clan (less ‘normal’ really, but I wonder about their origins as well).
Heck, it seems every single main character isn’t necessarily a normal human XDD Not even Shuurei or Ryuuki, heh.

lennan reply on October 23rd, 2007 12:08 pm:
Well, I sort of have to wonder too, continuing on the line of “not being a normal human being”, on the reason for the Eight Noble Families existing in the first place. Why are they so important, because there are a lot of people lower than them who hate them? It’s hard for me to imagine this series ending anytime soon if only because there are too many threads that would be left dangling, outside of the ShuureixRyuuki question. >_>
Actually, it’s really kind of frustrating.

Wow great summary and I was looking for the actual text for this volume. I’ve only read up to book 10 and selective bits of 11, but here are some thoughts:
Ryuuki’s change:
He’s a kind and gentle soul to begin with and it doesn’t surprise me that ultimately he does start to want to rule for himself. In previous volumes, Yukino Sai often writes about how Ryuuki realises he has more and more important things in his hands, and he realises he cannot lose any of them. He thinks he has become “greedy”. Having been thinking about that, it is not surprising he comes to the conclusion that he wants to be king out of his own desires.
His telling Shuurei about accepting Jyuu-san hime is suppose brings up mixed feelings for both?
Themes:
It seems that since Shuurei’s departure to Sa province and her subsequent return to Kiyou, a major idea in the story has been characters starting to see the reality of things and being put in positions where they must resolve inner conflicts. All in all, this makes Saiunkoku very different from how I envisioned it to be when I started reading it 2 years ago but it is good, because such is the nature of life.
What happens in the future:
I’m quite confused as the “narrator” has dropped many different hints about the future. What do you guys think? Anyone cares to compile the hints so we can make an educated guess? Here are some I recall:
1. Narrator mentions that people have the saying (loosely translated) with regards to Ryuuki’s reign: In administration there was Li and Kou, in military there was Ran and Shi…
2. Narrator mentions that the painting of Ryuuki and Shuurei done by Hakumei’s relative (forgot her name the busty lady) and her son, becomes famous in future.
Ah I’m sure there are more but I can’t remember offhand >_<

worldserpent@livejournal reply on October 25th, 2007 3:41 am:
Yeah, I agree with your comments about Ryuuki.
Oooh, another person who has read the novels!
Yes, I do like that aspect, that our idea of Saiunkoku is changing as the story goes on and the characters become more aware.
Some hints:
(Huh, I thought that it was just a painting of Ryuuki? I forget the details about the painting)
Ryuuki’s reign is said to be a golden age.
Many of the various characters from the Sa Province arc become famous later.
Shin Suou becomes a greatly respected censorate official.

aliene reply on October 25th, 2007 4:10 am:
XD Yes I love the novels most.
About the painting, it is a painting of the scene where Ryuuki and Shuurei stand side by side looking at the cherry blossom tree.
You know with those hints + the more and more apparent hints that those 2 do really have mutual feelings, I thought it was getting clearer that they would be together.
But then, there are other hints that seem to point at Shuurei remaining an official and becoming a famous one, lending her support to Ryuuki. Indeed, she can’t possibly reach those legendary heights in a short time and Ryuuki has stated he cannot wait for her infinitely…
SO WHAT’S GONNA HAPPEN?!!! (faints)

worldserpent@livejournal reply on October 25th, 2007 4:13 am:
Actually, honestly, in the books it seems to be getting more and more difficult. So I am really not sure what’s going to happen. If I had to put $$$ on it, I would still bet on them getting together, though, because the readers probably demand is.

I’m happy that Suou gets to be famous later on though. He’s very lovable and while he may not be a traditional bishie, I think life with Suou is a happy one, no?
Hahah, though with his character I’m not sure he himself wants to be famous!

worldserpent@livejournal reply on October 25th, 2007 7:29 am:
Heh, quite possibly. I am not sure whether Suou will hook up with anyone over the course of the story, though, as he seems to be out of the main plot for now.
Yeah, I don’t think he cares at all about fame. XD

aliene reply on October 25th, 2007 9:15 pm:
I’m not even sure if he’ll re-appear in the story….though maybe like Ensei he’ll make a big comeback (I hope) hahaha.
ok…I a little dissappointed that there hasn’t been any emphasis on the romantic aspects of this story for quite some time. It just seems to emphasis a sense of unfullfilled love…groan. That’s just frustrating.
I will be very sad if Shuuri doesn’t end up with Ryuuki or even Seiren. No matter how cool Jyuu-san hime may be, I don’t want her charector to replace the main charector, which is Shuuri. (esp. in the heart of Ryuuki..sniffle)

aliene reply on November 1st, 2007 10:37 pm:
I think the book points to Ryuuki and Hyuu-san hime getting along in a friendly way rather than romantic at the moment. And Jyuu-san hime seems like a stubborn girl who’ll stick to her 1 true love so…
And nah, Shuurei’s definitely the main character.

okay, you say to see pictures…so where are the pictures??? Help!!!

you know I’ve just thought of a rather ludicrous theory regarding Shuurei X Ryuuki “relationship”. They could get married but mayhap it would be secretive. The more, I read the summaries and slowly began to understanfd the machinations of Saiunkoku, the more I realise that most of the plot rebolves too closely on Shuurei and her past and her mother. HENCE, I think most of our question will be answered only when the story of bara-hime is explained What I’m interested is her past and her connection/entrapment by the Hyou Clan.
Furthermore, the amount time and effort the author has put into the RyuukiXShuurei saga(that’s what I call it), the more I think there’s more to it than meets the eye.
Remeber that it was Shou Taishi who brought Shuurei into the Imperial Harem? Why was SHE chosen out of all the other daughters of the noble clans? Their meeting was pre-arranged, but for what reason? They seemed to have been pushed together. If it was for the reason claimed by Shou, then I don’t buy it. There must be more.
Thats why my advise to RyuukiX Shuurei lovers, do not give up yet but dont get your hopes. As someone else has pointed out, Saiunkoku seems to be land of unrequited love.

Hi people,
Have you heard any news recently when Yukino Sai is gonna published her 13th Volume main work? I’ve been hearing rumours of stories further than Volume 12. I’m kinda getting suspicious if that far-ahead story is a leak, or it’s truly already out but not translated yet. Please, any kind of news?

Thank you so much for the summary! This is awesome! I just started my 1st year of Japanese class - and I must give great kudos to you and your work (and overall thankless) job!
It’s great to see Ryuuki changing in such amazing directions! Truly, this author is amazing - and I hope that one day, an official English translation comes out!

Yep, I am very pleased that Ryuuki is developing as a character and ruler like this. I am very interested to see where he’s going to go from here.

Can anyone please tell all they know about Shusui’s background? Please….. >.<
Was she rescued from the Hyou clan by Shouka or something?
Was she work in there? & how can the Hyou clan controlled her? Was she their ‘doll’ or something???
“Ryuuki tells Shuurei as king, he must marry, and he shall have Jyuusan-hime enter the Inner Palace as Shusui’s replacement.”
Wait, what was Shusui’ job again in the Inner Palace? Isn’t she kinda like a maid/ servant in there? So would Jyuusan-Hime be a ‘maid’?
“If he marries anyone other than Shuurei, it shall be her. He cannot afford to wait for Shuurei. Shuurei is more moved than she thought she would be by these words.”
Is Shuurei considering to be Ryuuki’s empress now?
I don’t really get this part….
“So he shall give himself a certain period of time to win her hand, a time which is not short, but not long either…”
I don’t really get this part either (may be because of my lack in English)
So, Ryuuki will give himself a certain period of time right? But for win whose hand? Shuurei or Jyuusan-Hime???
[Reply]
May be a spoiller or may be not, since I don’t really know this scene….
Shouka, Seiran, Reishin and Kouyuu stalked Shuurei. Then they found out that she actually went to the Inner Palace’s Garden and met Ryuuki in there, then they (Shuurei & Ryuuki) talked a bit, then Ryuuki kissed her, Shuurei didn’t resist, but she cried…..
Does anyone know where and when is this scene actually occur????

Hey, guess what?! I’ve been reading that same story scene @ Yahoo!answers session. A few bloggers at forums claimed to have read that far already. They said it’s the latest.
I’m starting to wonder… If they haven’t published this story scene in the latest novels, could it be already in the Japanese magazine, ‘The Beans’ or the manga ‘Beans Ace’ (published by Kadokawa Shoten), where Saimono is serialized? Or could this all be just a hoax, like J.K.Rowling has been experiencing with her Harry Potter leaks?

Hi,
I’m rather new with this series and i can’t quite understand why people are so focused about who will end-up with Shuurei because it’s going light-years before that will be resolved
After reading your summaries i’m still wondering why people overlook that the plots are running into two realties.
- One is the physical Saiunkoku whose plots have already lengthly discussed here.
- One is the mythical Saiunkoku which the author let bits of information here and there.
From my point of view the mythical Saiunkoku is going to have a very important influence on how the plots will get resolved in the physical one.
Well just how bad was the destruction of the mirror ?
Who is going to play the ghostbuster with an erhu ?
Can you play the erhu and did your da broke the mirror ?
It is obvious that Shuurei will have to deal with her mother past and identity and the outcome won’t please a lot of reader because it’s heavily implied that she will have to take over her mom duties.
Seeing her as a de-facto member of the Haku clan or doing their duties is among what i expect to happen in the next novels.
Furthermore there is a non-zero probability that she might end-up at the head of the Haku clan which was know to be a matriarchy.
Now if you ask me how, with all that potentials burdens, she will end-up with XXXX character, my answer is i don’t know.
Another mythical Saiunkoku over the physical one is Sho Taishi influence and potential actions in this mess. He just got an emperor worthy to his service and i guess he won’t wrangle his hands when will get deadly serious.
We will get some serious Deus Ex Machina ahead of us if the author overdo it which i hope not.
Somehow i hope to have widen a bit the field of reflexion.
