Context: Conversation between Shuurei and Ryuuki at the end of book 12.
….That night, Ryuuki visited Shuurei alone.
“I have something to say. Shall we go onto the deck?”
Shuurei’s heart pounded strangely. Since Ryuuki had awoken, they had conversed, but never just the two of them. If he were to say in a formal manner “I have something to say,” things were very off. Maybe it was because General Ran had said strange things to him. Shuurei shook her head .
“All right. Let’s go.”
Ryuuki walked to the deserted tail of the ship. There was something strange about moving back while the boat was advancing. They went to the very back, and then sat down next to each other. If you looked up into the sky, the constellations of summer, were already being pursued by the stars of autumn.
“Sorry.”
Ryuuki apologized from the heart, for flying off like he was fleeing.
“But, I was happy you came to get me.”
His whisper, like a sigh, was heartfelt. He had truly been happy.
Shuurei hugged her knees.
“I was worried. Even so, just a bit. ”
After a moment of silence, Ryuuki muttered:
“I heard from Shuuei that you cried for me.”
Shuurei stiffened. –Why did General Ran know something like that?
(Ehh? He wasn’t there!)
“That’s a lie! It’s a lie! General Ran was making that up!”
“Hmph.”
Ryuuki snorted in reply. He seemed happy. Shuurei grew even more dismayed.
“Shuurei.”
“Wh-wha-what?”
After he got on the boat, the unbearably painful feeling within Ryuuki’s breast had re-awakened.
“We can no longer become king for Shuurei’s sake.”
At those words, Shuurei was surprised.
While looking at the moon floating over the rolling waves, Ryuuki said bit, by bit:
“I still don’t know what “for the sake of the people” is, but I won’t lie about it. However, I want to be a king worthy of Yuushun who is waiting for me, Seiran, Shuuei, and Shuurei who risked her job to come after me. Maybe this is late. But we seek the king we alone can be. We will walk seeking our own path.”
Shuurei felt she vaguely understood the reason Ryuuki had left the castle without saying anything. Thus the answer he had given to her now, had always been his answer to that question.
Shuurei did not think those words were cold.
The person who was sitting next to her now was the king.
It was an odd way of putting it, but Shuurei felt that at this moment, Ryuuki had become king right before her eyes.
“A king must marry.”
Shuurei’s heart pounded at these slowly punctuated words. Today the conversation had shifted to an unexpected topic.
“….Th-that’s right.”
“I will admit Jyuusan-hime into the Inner Palace.”
Shuurei herself did not really know what kind of expression she was making. She was only certain that Ryuuki was extremely quiet, and had a calm look on his face. Before Shuurei could say something, Ryuuki continued.
“We will admit her as the Chief Lady-in-Waiting.”
“…Chief Lady-in-Waiting?”
“Shusui is still missing. We were told this before we came here, but without someone to manage things, the Inner Palace will definitely be in chaos. The Chief Lady-in-Waiting who presides over all of the Ladies-in-Waiting of the Inner Palace and servants, and is the closest to us, must be a woman we can trust. That is why at this point we will make Jyuusan-hime Shusui’s successor, and install her as the Chief Lady-in-Waiting.”
Ryuuki continued without waiting for Shuurei to say something.
“If we formally take as a wife anyone besides Shuurei, we will choose Jyuusan-hime. We will only need to promote her from from Chief Lady-in-Waiting to consort,” he said, finishing.
It was like you could unhesitatingly say it was impossible that this was the same person as the one who had muttered “if you say ‘congratulations,’ I’ll be angry” when Jyuusan-hime had come. Shuurei was, rather, in a state of shock.
Strange. This shouldn’t be. This was the opposite of usual. She should have just laughed, hohoho, and said “Ah, so you’ve finally prepared for the worst.” But why couldn’t those words come out? She definitely had a feeling that Ryuuki was preparing for the worst, but she felt that she had expected a different kind of preparation.
Ryuuki, not letting go of the initiative, pressed on.
“Shuurei.”
“Wh-wh-what?”
“We will marry. Since that is the duty of the king, we must definitely do that. So, we can no longer continue to wait for Shuurei forever.”
Shuurei swallowed her breath.
He could not keep on waiting. Of course. But the strange thing was, Shuurei just realized now that it was as if she had never thought that she would hear such words from Ryuuki.
She was more moved than she had thought she would be.
And what was more, Ryuuki did not for a moment move his eyes away, so he saw Shuurei’s agitation leak out. But if he were to turn them away, something more dangerous than that might be revealed, she felt, so there was nothing she could do about it. Reading Shuurei’s thoughts, Ryuuki was relieved. It seemed that some way or another, his chances were not nonexistent.
Yet he knew full well that Shuurei’s determination was harder than a boulder.
“Therefore, let’s have a match.”
“A match?”
“Yes. The time limit starts from now. If until that time, Shuurei runs completely away, then it will be Shuurei’s win. We will no longer say that we want to marry Shuurei. We will not be at a loss. We will marry Jyuusan-hime.”
Ryuuki had stopped taking the attitude of “waiting,” and now had struck.
For Ryuuki, this was a move he could not take back afterwards.
“If, during that time period, we are able to make Shuurei agree, it will be our win. How’s that?”
Considered calmly, Shuurei really had no duty to accept this. It was something she could reject. But Shuurei right now was mentally caught in Ryuuki’s trap, so lacked even a speck of the calmness or leeway she would have needed to think about that.
Also, somehow wanting to show off that she had regained her footing, she ended up saying too much.
“Ha haha. Doesn’t this put you at a disadvantage?”
“What? Isn’t that better for Shuurei?”
When he responded grinningly, Shuurei was taken aback.
“G..g.got it. Why don’t I take up that challenge.”
“Okay. Then the time period is….”
Then Ryuuki told her what it was.
It was not short, but it was certainly not long either. As if to show Ryuuki meant it.
Shuurei accepted this.
….And at that time, she realized something, with a bit of self-consciousness.

Go Ryuuki!!! *waves pom-poms*
Not only does he decide he wants to be king for himself, he one-ups Shuurei and gives her an ultimatum! Very nicely done on his part.
Thanks so much for the translations! Can’t wait for the next novel…

Heh, thanks.
Yeah, it will be interesting to see how Shuurei processes all of this later.

I’m glad for Ryuuki’s change. I still hope Ryuuki and Shuurei can have a happy ever after ending. Since I don’t know Japanese, I’m glad I found your site. Thanks for the translation!!!

How much time is the real spoiler that every SK fans would have to know.
Too bad we can’t overhear what Ryuuki said to Shuurei.

charmian reply on February 15th, 2008 1:17 am:
Come on, you know this author, she loves to hint at things and leave everything as ambiguous as possible. XD
[Reply]
the only time frame he told her was “not short, but not long either” whatever the exact time frame was, we’ll only know when that time is up.
may first seems to be so near yet so far for the next book. grrr.
i sure hope there’d be more developments, especially on the plot of ou ki.
[Reply]
charmian reply on February 15th, 2008 1:34 am:
Yes. I am extremely interested in Ou Ki now. If he’s going to be a plausible antagonist he needs a lot more character development.
[Reply]
thanks! that cleared things a lot. now it’s obvious shuurei is not totally indifferent to ryuuki’s affections. and ryuuki definitely has changed a lot… now that i read this, i don’t know how i can last till the next novel…
[Reply]
charmian reply on February 15th, 2008 7:25 am:
She’s never been totally indifferent, but she’s also never really confronted it, I think. Ryuuki has changed a lot, and I like that.

Heee, first off, it’s been a while since i dropped by and commented….
I think Shuurei likes this change in Ryuuki as well.
I wanted to read the next volume but couldn’t find the e-book yet though =_=”…will be counting on Charmian for tasty morsels of info till then! heee heee

Thank you!
My friend and I, not realizing that the manga is oh so different from the light novel, have been attempting to hunt it down. (We’ve never really been for details)
Until I managed to find this site.
I wish it was clearer though. The author’s job seems to erect as many obstacles for Shuurei and Ryuuki (that happen to have a strong foundation) and making their supposed relationship as generally vague as possible. This will be driving me nuts.
Thanks for the translations, I really appreciate it! (Still, this won’t be ending soon, will it…) I mean, I love their relationship to bits but still, I think that the writer should really stop building obstacles… (There was enough from the very beginning, thank you very much.)
This will drive me crazy!

charmian reply on February 15th, 2008 7:22 am:
I think actually the manga is somewhat closer to the light novel than the anime, but I don’t really read it, so you’d have to ask someone who does read both what they think.
Oh, this isn’t confined to the Shuurei + Ryuuki thing, it also applies to all of the other plots.
The vagueness is rather madness inducing. Also, I agree with you that it seems as though the author is getting rather excessive with all of the obstacles. Of course you need them, but when you factor in the ones that Shuurei and Ryuuki are not even very aware of, it becomes somewhat ridiculous.

Lycoris reply on February 15th, 2008 7:45 am:
Yep! Now, if only she’d give an answer for Shuurei… Or could it be that she doesn’t know? Or will she kill us from suspense?
Let’s just hope that she will manage to wrap this neatly enough… it’s not only hard for us, it’s hard for her, too!
[Reply]
charmian reply on February 15th, 2008 8:01 am:
Well… I hope the author does have a good plan here. But it really does seem like she’s just trying to make it harder and harder for herself.
[Reply]
Lycoris reply on February 15th, 2008 8:04 am:
It is kind of cute though… in a bittersweet way…
But that’s not it. In effectively encompassing an entire kingdom, the end is getting farther and farther from sight… Which sucks.
[Reply]
charmian reply on February 15th, 2008 8:07 am:
Well, I actually like that it’s encompassing the entire kingdom, because, after all, it is the “story of Saiunkoku,” but at the same time, guhhhh I don’t want to wait until May.
[Reply]
Lycoris reply on February 15th, 2008 8:32 am:
I suppose… but then, waiting will eventually be the least of our concerns if the story’s ending doesn’t satisfy the tension they’re building up now.
And we’re doomed if she gets writer’s block or something… right?
aliene reply on March 5th, 2008 12:14 am:
I’ve read both, the manga IS as the novel is..I’ve yet to spot any changes yet.
It is the anime (as usual?) that has had to change the timelines a little and add some fillers etc to probably make for better viewing.
[Reply]
kaeboo reply on March 5th, 2008 12:50 am:
there are some fillers in the manga that are not in the light novels. like that one where the boys joined that beauty pageant for shuurei and everyone did not know the person who proclaimed winner. that one’s really hilarious, only that i can no longer find more mangas scanlated in english. my chinese is very rusty and i can no longer make out the meaning of one full sentence when i see the characters.
thanks to me not practicing.

aliene reply on March 6th, 2008 2:32 am:

comments don’t nest below that level, so response to Lycoris’s comment:
I sure hope she doesn’t. Ah well… at least I’ve improved my Japanese through this. I just hope they resolve the major plots.
[Reply]
Lycoris reply on February 15th, 2008 8:40 am:
Well, that’s great for you!
Well, they most likely will, I’m not sure if it will be optimistic, though.
[Reply]
charmian reply on February 15th, 2008 8:42 am:
I actually don’t care whether it’s optimistic or not, actually, but since the novels do say that Ryuuki’s reign was a golden age, I’m guessing he doesn’t get overthrown and manages to become a great king.
[Reply]
Lycoris reply on February 15th, 2008 8:35 pm:
That’s good, at the very least, it’d be bittersweet instead of just… bitter.

charmian reply on March 5th, 2008 7:25 am:
Well… That gives him a bit less than a year, because the story takes place in late summer. Although, that also means that the series won’t have that long to go, considering the pacing.

[Reply]
kaeboo reply on March 5th, 2008 12:47 am:
well, it would most probably gonna be an episode that would leave everything hanging because everything was left hanging when novel 12 was ended.
the author’s crazy. hehehehe. i just hope she starts disentangling the trouble she has set for all the characters and focus on building the characters of the most worthy adversary.
[Reply]
Lycoris reply on March 5th, 2008 5:19 am:
Actually, my theory is that Season 2 will be left hanging at Ryuuki’s (cute) ultimatum. Although, if that was the case, there’d have a problem, considering they might have to specify the deadline, which has not been given. Quite interesting, but annoying as a result with the length of time it would take to find out what happens. I’m curious if the anime will change the ending should there be a third season.
[Reply]
kaeboo reply on March 5th, 2008 6:18 am:
i sure hope not… though the fear is there, i don’t think they will, at all… the saimono fandom is big enough that wreaks in good profit.
[Reply]
Lycoris reply on March 5th, 2008 6:38 am:
Of course, we must take in the consideration that, at this point, the authoress might end up with an ending we won’t like, and if that happens, we end up relying on the anime for the ending (which is, as you say, unlikely)… -_-;;
[Reply]
charmian reply on March 5th, 2008 7:17 am:
? I don’t see that happening. If they do a season 3, it’ll probably be after they have gotten enough books to get through that point. If the series ends by then, I think they’ll animate the novel ending.

charmian reply on March 5th, 2008 7:24 am:
Hmm… Well, I think we are going to have to wait years for that, unless they start doing OVAS.
[Reply]
kaeboo reply on March 5th, 2008 8:20 am:
yep, it’s gonna be years, considering that one season practically covers approximately 6 novels (plus the jumps and fillers).
these things happen. unless they would want a different storyline starting the third season, then, there’s where the trouble comes in like what they did to rourouni kenshin.
on a bright side, though, they also did that long freeze after the 2nd season and waited for the manga to finish in the case of kyou kara maoh… which, will be aired soon.
we’re all in a(
n exasperating) wait and see mode.[Reply]

I think it is painfully obvious Shuurei won in the end. C’mon, I don’t think she’s that stupid to give up her dreams just to marry the man she (at this period of time) probably loves.
But, of course, it is my little 0.1% hope that Shuurei will manage to realize her dream before the time limit is up. That way, she’ll be doubly happy because I think she really does love Ryuuki after all. She might not fully realize it now, but there have been a lot of hints about these feelings that have shocked and pained her.
Next novel up is about Kouyuu and the king eh? Let’s see what went wrong -_-;

charmian reply on March 5th, 2008 7:23 am:

Ummm.
I think what we think doesn’t matter very much. It’s all about the Japanese market. /shrug
In any event, even if there is a season 3, I would say it’ll be at least two years.
[Reply]
the 2nd season has finally closed with this scene. they changed it a bit to be in parallel with the first season ending where they met again under the tree where they first met.
the anime seems to emphasize the enmity between ouki and ryuuki in the end. this gives me more reason to watch ouki’s next move. he is a very intriguing character.
this gives me a reason to watch yuushun, too.
for those following the anime, i think it would indeed be 2 years, at the very least before they’d release the next season, and hopefully the final season.
[Reply]
do you think its possible to get a scan to let us see how jyuusan hime looks like? I’m really curious… is she more prettier than shuurei ^_^, and yeah >.< hopefully theres a 3rd season, but like you guys say, it’ll probably take years for the books to get out and for the anime to be made, I really want the ending to be good one, I dont care who ryuuki ends up with as long as he doesnt feel lonely anymore , and he feels happy…. thts good enough for me

first of all thanks a lot for translating this. I want to read the novel myself too, unfortunately, i’m not very fluent in Japanese and i have no idea how i can get the SM novels short of going to japan myself.

I can’t help but wanting to comment at this certain scene…. I suppose this act is like a wake up call for Shuurei regarding Ryuuki. I figure all this time, Shuurei never really sees Ryuuki as the king, but then again, it’s partly Ryuuki’s fault, wanting to be known as Shi Ryuuki instead of the King in front of her.
And Ryuuki has been kind, if not too kind to her, by repeatedly emphasizing that he’ll wait for her. And in a way, it makes Shuurei feels safe, that no matter what, she can count on Ryuuki for waiting for her. So now she’s faced that it’s no longer the problem, it brings up a lot of things to her that she didn’t notice before. It sounds that, Shuurei indeed has feelings for Ryuuki, although vague.
And strangely, even as inclined as I am to RyuukixShuurei, I don’t really mind getting Jyuusan-hime with Ryuuki instead. Love isn’t the sole, important thing to be happy. Jyuusan-hime kinda complement Ryuuki.
Hmm, I cannot recall when Shuurei cried for Ryuuki that was mentioned in the beginnig…
Your translation is really helpful for me who’s unable to even lay a hand on the novels… Thank you very much~!
