Keep in mind that I CANNOT personally confirm any of this information, as I do not have the book yet. ALL information below in this post (which will be continually updated, until I can get the novel myself and write my own summary) is at your own risk, and the blogger assumes no responsibility for any liability which might occur.
EDIT: I now have the book, and am reading it. So far all of the spoilers seem to be generally correct. I will try to write a summary soon.
According to this board, the illustrations are:
Ou Ki and Kouki, Shuurei and Ensei, Ryuuki + Shuuei + Kouyuu + Uu Uu+Riou, Houju and Undersecretary Kei (I think that’s what they mean), Shuuei and Kouyuu, You Shuu (poster says he “looks young”), Shuurei and Kouyuu, and Reishin and Yuri (the poster says that this is very raburabu).
If this is correct, this means there’s a high possibility that Yuri will show up! And I’m excited that there will be an illustration of You Shuu as well, because I wonder if there will be any differences from his chara design in the anime.
More: Someone on the board published a summary.
Book begins with the scene where Reishin found Kouyuu. Kouyuu had been abandoned as a scapegoat/?sacrifice.
The scene then shifts to where Seiga and You Shuu arrest and improsion Kouyuu (this is during the events of book 12).
Ryuuki returns to the palace, and apologizes to Ou Ki and the others for not being a good king. He doesn’t reveal that the Hyou clan was trying to kill him, thus protecting Riou and Uu Uu. Shuurei receives permission from Kouki to defend Kouyuu.
The Hyou clan has placed a spell on Kouyuu, causing him to fall into a trance. Shuurei looks for materials to defend Kouyuu with, and she learns that her uncle is the Civil Secretary.
Kou Kijin is very angry with Reishin, but his anger seems to have no effect on him. There’s something about a promise Yuushun made (or was made to him?) when he went to Sa Province.
Yuri applies to visit Kouyuu in jail. She plays the biwa to him, and Kouyuu remembers when Reishin named him. Realizing that Reishin is waiting for him, he awakens.
Both Shuurei and Kouyuu have realized that Seiga’s true aim is Reishin’s dismissal. So, they decide to call for his dismissal under Kouyuu’s name. Shuurei uses her authority as a censorate official to bring this to Ryuuki, and Ryuuki and Yuushun are able to dismiss Reishin. By doing this, although Kouyuu has lost his position, he is still considered an official.
In the epilogue, Yuushun shows his dark side, Shuurei and Ensei have perhaps discovered past corruption in the Gyoshidai/Censorate (?), Ryuuki learns about the succession and the Hyou clan from Uu Uu (YES), and it seems that Reishin is returning to Kou Province while Yuri is staying in the capital(?). Shuurei tells Seiran that she cannot be empress because she cannot have children.
EDIT: Another person popped up and said something about whether Undersecretary Ouyou implied that the Heki clan was going to withdraw their officials. The way it’s stated is kind of unclear. Oh, also, I didn’t mention it before, but Shuuei also got demoted (he’s now working under Seiran? Heh) when he tried to re-enlist, so people are wondering if he and Kouyuu are going to have to work their way up again.
EDIT 2: From another blog, very short, but the new ones are, Heki Karin (Hakumei’s elder sister) is hired to make a sacred mirror to replace the one Shouka broke, but it seems that if she creates it, she’ll die. [Huh... the other spoilers didn't mention this. Upcoming plot featuring the Heki clan in more detail?]
YET ANOTHER EDIT: Someone on the Japanese board asked about the cover, and another person answered. The keys Shuurei is holding on the cover is the key to Kouyuu’s jail. Kouyuu is holding the haigyoku carved with the iris that Ryuuki gave him. (Haigyoku=that carved orb worn as an ornament). As for Reishin’s clothes, nothing is mentioned in the book on that point… It’s probably artistic license. [Possibly the author is attempting to show that it's dark, and in the dark colors lose their brightness?]
The Java finches (文鳥) appear in Kouyuu’s dream, guiding him.
MINOR NOTE: There is no bookmark.
MORE: Shuurei and Reishin don’t meet in this book, apparently.
MORE2: Someone else says that You Shuu is very impressive in this book, and that he’s kind of different from how he is in the anime.[EDIT: Confirmed. Character design looks quite different. He's wearing glasses. ] Seiga comes down with some kind of illness. Nothing more is clarified about Yuushun’s past. There’s something about how the Seven Houses are becoming more and more alienated from the capital. … I managed to find more impression posts, but most of them don’t give many concrete details besides things like “I loved the scene where chara A and chara B were talking!” or “Kouki is TEH HAWT.”
Commentary: If this is correct, WOW. I never would have suspected that Kouyuu would go so far as to call for Reishin’s dismissal, but I’m actually pleased to see that the books take Reishin’s being a bad official seriously. Now I really wonder what is going to happen in the next book.
The finches puzzle me. These birds haven’t shown up in the novels before, IIRC. Do they have some significance in Chinese culture? Or is it just an annoying joke? (文鳥=Java finch, 文官=civil official) Also, if there are Java finches in the Saiunkoku verse, does that mean that there’s a Java equivalent?

HOLY. O.o;
It sounds legit, but is it? I mean, the book doesn’t come out until next month. If this were like a week before it’s release I might believe it, but it seems just a wee bit early for this kind of detailed summary.
That being said, I really do hope for raburabu scenes with Reishin and Yuri (well, as raburabu as those two can get, anyway).

Hmm, from what the commenters say, it seems to be shipping on various online retailers… I guess time will tell.

I just read fan translations in Chinese yesterday, and yes there is a rabu rabu scene, but in typical reishin and yuri fashion
[Reply]
Mmmkay, I checked out the board and stretched my kanji muscles a bit . . . .
According to that summary, yes, Reishin is returning to Kou Province for a bit while Yuri stays in the capital Kiyou. It should also be noted that before that it says that Reishin and Yuri “ichatsuitetari”, and looking that up in my dictionary it seems that “ichatsuku” is a verb for “necking/flirting/love making.” O.O Hoo boy, it might very well be raburabu!

charmian reply on April 23rd, 2008 6:34 pm:
Oh, I put in the question because I was more shocked that Reishin was actually *returning* to Kou Province when it seemed like he had gone through such extreme trouble to remain in the capital. XD
[Reply]
Ah. Well, Reishin was mainly in the capital to be near his brother, but he’s been there for years now. In any case, now that he’s been dismissed he has no excuse for not doing the work of the Kou head. But who knows? There may be a very good reason why he’s returning to Kou province and leaving Yuri behind, one that may have some relevance later in the story.

charmian reply on April 23rd, 2008 8:23 pm:
Yep, good point. The summary is rather vague on many things, so I’m wondering what Reishin thinks about all of this. We’ll have to wait until there are either more detailed spoilers or I receive the book.
[Reply]
Thanks for this, it makes for very interesting reading and it will be fantastic to finally get Kouyuu and Reishin’s initial meeting after all this time.
The summary is interestingly vague on any Reishin-Kouyuu interactions or even Reishin’s role in general in the novel, I wonder if this is because the people contributing to the thread want to keep some plot points as surprises or if he simply doesn’t play much of a role. It does seem strange that there is no Reishin-Kouyuu picture, which seems to suggest that we don’t get some sort of scene or altercation between them, although we could be leading up to that in the next book. The summary doesn’t seem to really say that Kouyuu officially makes a choice between following Ryuuki or remaining loyal to the Kous/Reishin, and I would be a tad dissapointed if Kouyuu did so without facing Reishin. Of course, Shuuei’s arc spread over more than one novel, so this one might as well.
The tidbit about Shuurei at the end REALLY throws a spanner into the works. It will be fascinating to see where it leads.
Thank you very much for this!

It’s a speed summary that gives very few details of anything, really, so I wouldn’t put much stock in it.
Well, I was totally expecting that? Shuurei doesn’t know about the mystic stuff, so it’s the most obvious reason.
You’re welcome.
[Reply]
Aaaaah. This confirms what I’ve long suspected about Shuurei, although it’s interesting that she hasn’t told Ryuuki yet. I wonder if maybe there’s a way around it? Although I have to wonder that, otherwise having this confirmed will make me a great deal more depressed about it than I am already.
I’m glad that someone is finally Telling Ryuuki Stuff. And I guess Shuurei finally knows that Reishin’s her uncle? I mean, could she logically not know after this? It seems unlikely.
[Reply]
charmian reply on April 23rd, 2008 10:51 pm:
The summarizer directly says that Shuurei learns Reishin is her uncle.
Yes… I don’t know why she doesn’t tell Ryuuki already. But now that she’s told Seiran, maybe he can help somehow resolve the situation, as far as telling people.

Anonymous reply on April 23rd, 2008 11:48 pm:
that makes me sad
but…umm… how did Seiran responded by.
My fangirl mode has me thinking –>
Seiran: “Marry me!!!!! there’s no pressure to pop out babies if you do”

charmian reply on April 24th, 2008 2:35 am:
The summary doesn’t say. It’s just a speed summary of the biggest plot events.
[Reply]
Quick question:
In the summary on the board it says that someone goes to see Kouyuu while he’s under the trance and tells him, “Do you understand why Reishin is doing what he is?” Which I think is interesting, but for the life of my I cannot figure out the reader for the two kanji that indicate the subject of that sentence. Who goes to see Kouyuu!?
[Reply]
charmian reply on April 24th, 2008 2:37 am:
You Shuu.
[Reply]
Oooh so the Kyou clan is involved in there too ? I hope this means their intentions will be a bit more clear…
I can’t wait for more details, thanks for this “summary of spoilers” !
[Reply]
charmian reply on April 24th, 2008 2:37 am:
Eh… well, I think their intentions are fairly clear, though, they want to depose Ryuuki and put someone else in his place.
[Reply]
Huh. And here I thought that the Heki clan was fairly neutral in their relationship with the royalty. And if that’s true, it’s a shame, considering Hakumei genuinely wanted to be an official.
Wasn’t Karin being considered for the position of the Heki clan leader? If so, I can’t imagine her wanting to pull the Heki officials out (considering she’s kinda indebted to the King). And if she’s the heir I can’t imagine her creating a sacred mirror for the Hyou clan either, as she’s a rather important personage in the Heki clan.
[Reply]
charmian reply on April 24th, 2008 5:38 pm:
She’s not the head now, though.
Yeah, they really don’t give many details on exactly what the situation is behind that.
[Reply]
L-chan reply on April 25th, 2008 12:11 am:
Hmmm. I would think that she carries a lot of weight being the genius artist “Heki Yuukoku” though. And since the Heki clan, as Hakumei put it, “excels in art and literature”, you’d think they’d want to keep her around. Unless the Hyou are stepping on their necks perhaps.
[Reply]
*sigh…* i was kinda hoping some action from Ouki and Ryouou since the last book suggests their plot for the throne. nywei, thanks for the info! XD
if Shuurei told Seiran bout her not becoming an empress bcoz she cannot have children at the epilogue, doesnt that mean she’ll tell ryuuki at the next book and their bet would come to an end?
are the accusations to Kouyuu and why he was imprisoned clear now?? im kinda confused with the summary plots. it sounds like kouyuu dismissed Reishin by how? passing the blame to him? 0_o

Thanks for the spoiler.

Well… It’s a surprise if you watch the anime, because IIRC they didn’t animate the part where Shuurei goes to the doctor and later says she can’t marry at all.

Who is Yuri?
Is Kouyuu the bad guy?

charmian reply on April 26th, 2008 2:28 am:
To find out who Yuri is, read the summary of the third gaiden! If you don’t know, I don’t want to spoil you.
Er… no? Reishin doesn’t care whether he’s Civil Admin Secretary or not, remember?
[Reply]
Thanks for keeping us updated! The finches are a really interesting tibit, and I can’t wait to see how they’re used. I’m a little bit surprised that there are no pictures yet (at least my searches haven’t turned up anything) so your little updates of info are really great for tiding me over! It doesn’t seem as though anything has come out yet about any conversations between Kouyuu and Reishin, I guess I’ll have to keep my fingers crossed for that.
[Reply]
charmian reply on April 26th, 2008 3:51 am:
I’m not surprised. By and large, Japanese fans don’t do scans. It’s a taboo in Japanese fandom to do more than small pics, and considering the book is already out in the areas near the major metropoles, there’s really no need for it, from their perspective.
It may be, actually, that they don’t meet in the book in the present. I am kind of suspecting that might be the case after reading a lot of the more fangirly impression posts that mention conversations between characters.
[Reply]
Cairnsy reply on April 26th, 2008 4:03 am:
That’s been my impression of the spoilers so far, as I thought any interaction between Reishin and Kouyuu probably have been mentioned. I’m hoping it’s something that is being set up for the next novel, the author is very good at threading pieces of one plot through several novels.
In the past I’ve usually been able to find a couple of copies of inner novel images online soon after their release on Japanese blogs, although you’re certainly right that they’re very rare.
[Reply]
Anonymous reply on April 26th, 2008 2:52 pm:
the Chinese fan boards are probably your best bet to get full scans
I’m sure they’ll show up soon

charmian reply on April 26th, 2008 8:53 pm:
Yeah…
I second what the other poster said, look on the Chinese boards. It’s kind of against Japanese custom (and needless) for them to do that. Anyone who is really desperate to get the novel ordered it from an online shop and probably has it now, unless they live in a truly isolated area.

Cairnsy reply on April 26th, 2008 9:26 pm:
That’s probably what I found previously, to be honest. Anyway, the pictures have shown up on the Saiunkoku community so the hunt is over. I’m really looking forward to your summaries and I hope you enjoy the novel!
[Reply]
Whee! Images linked on the SaiMono LJ!
Well, there’s your answer to the question about the Java Finches. (it looks just stylistic to me, I don’t know if the birds will actually be in the book)
You Shuu = AWESOME design. Waaaaaaay better than the anime. But it makes me sad, cause if we ever do get another season, we’re stuck with the dowdy version instead of the hot Megane-chara version. *pout*
The Reishin and Yuri picture . . . . Awwwwwww . . how cute.
[Reply]
charmian reply on April 26th, 2008 9:41 pm:
Oh yeah, they are in the book. They’re beings in Kouyuu’s dream, that allow people to speak to him through them, although they exist previously.
I know! But the way they interpret his scenes in the anime is really different from how I interpreted them in the novel. (Scenes with Reishin) Unlike the other characters, there is a LOT of physical description of You Shuu also. (because his appearance is unusual)
[Reply]
Why does it seem like instead of resolving some problems from previous story plots, this new book is actually making more problems for everyone?
And why does it seem like despite Ryuuki’s resolve to be a good king to fix things, his empire is actually falling apart?
[Reply]
charmian reply on April 28th, 2008 9:59 pm:
Well, they do resolve the Kouyuu thing, really, and now we do have more information.
Resolve isn’t enough, it seems… You have to know how to do it.

Cairnsy reply on April 28th, 2008 10:32 pm:
I’m especially looking forward to your summary now - I hope it’s been an enjoyable read!
Just one question if you don’t mind (I don’t want to flood you with too many because I understand how frustrating that must be!), but do we get closure between Kouyuu and Reishin as well, or is it more that we get a resolution between Kouyuu and serving Ryuuki? I know they’re very similiar, but I’m still holding out (possibly against all odds) for some sort of Reishin and Kouyuu scene.
[Reply]
charmian reply on April 28th, 2008 10:38 pm:
? I don’t really understand what you mean by this, but Reishin and Kouyuu do not meet in this novel. I think there is definitely a sense of closure, though, and Kouyuu does resolve to serve Ryuuki.
[Reply]
I gotta admit I was confused (still am actually) on who You Shuu really was….After reading some posts from communities I saw that I wasn’t the only who didn’t remember him…
Another question: What’s the Heki clan gotta do with making magic mirrors? I didn’t even know they were actually part of the 8 noble familes (or was it said in one of the summaries/translations? sorry if it was and I just haven’t read it yet…)
[Reply]
charmian reply on April 28th, 2008 10:33 pm:
See the volume 10 summary.
They are one of the Eight Noble families… Try look at the wiki article to see the names of all of the families? It is mentioned from the time Hakumei appears. As for the magic mirror, this is the first we’ve heard that the Heki clan is responsible for creating them.

I forgot who was You shuu too then I went searching… n Omg doesn’t he look entirely different from the anime version!?
And Shuurei can’t have babies!! Another shock even though I read rumours about it. *can’t believe it’s confirmed*
But Ryuuren mentioned that Shuurei’s body is changing right..? So, is there any chance of Ryuuki and Shuurei ending up……………….. =(
I think it’s rather weird that they “sacrifice” Reishin to keep Kouyuu as an official. I mean isn’t Reishin a competent and high post official despite the fact that he absolutely dislikes Ryuuki..
Thanks for your updates!!!! =))
[Reply]
charmian reply on April 29th, 2008 9:08 am:
Yeah… That might be a problem if they do a new season, considering how big You Shuu’s role is in this volume. I wonder how the heck they would continue the anime considering that a lot of this volume relies on the 3rd gaiden, and there’s the fact that the scene where Reishin found Kouyuu is entirely different from the anime.
I have no idea…. We’ll just have to see what happens.
No, it actually isn’t IMHO, because the books repeat over and over and over again that Reishin has no interest in being an official or serving the royal family. It’s not a matter of personal dislike, it’s that he fundamentally lacks the proper motivation for the job.
[Reply]
Hello! Thanks for the summary. But why can’t Shuurei have children? Because her body was weak in her childhood? I wish Ryuuki and Shuurei were together.
